How do I choose the right therapist?

Given how important the quality of the relationship between therapist and client can be in determining whether therapy works, it really is worth taking your time to find the right therapist for you. Meeting with a few therapists before embarking upon the actual therapy gives you a chance to assess how comfortable you feel around each of them. Try and decide which one you could most imagine talking more deeply about your concerns with and go with this instinct.

Because of the need for us to meet before a client commits to therapy, I offer a free half hour session online for us to get to know one another. I then urge people to have a think and let me know if they'd like to come back as I think this is less pressurising. And don’t forget, you can also give the process a few sessions to see how you find it and then make a decision. After the first few sessions, I will often ask new clients how they’re finding the process, as I’m aware it can take a while to settle into the rhythm of therapy. One of the main aims of therapy is to help you feel more able to speak honestly and openly about your thoughts and feelings. So having an early open conversation about therapy itself can be a good place to start!

Testimonials

“I approached the counselling process with a certain level of trepidation and anxiety. However Alison was able to be supportive and reassuring, creating a safe environment. The sessions were undertaken at a pace I felt comfortable with and it was clear Alison was able to respond to my individual situation which was multifaceted. I found the process helpful and beneficial.I would be more than comfortable approaching Alison in the future should the need arise.” Anonymous, Glasgow
